Disney's 'Planes' was a 2013 American 3D computer-animated sports comedy film. It was extremely popular with audiences, produced by DisneyToon Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures.
"Planes" was introduced in Pixar's 'Cars' franchise and the first film in a planned Planes trilogy. So far, two 'Planes' films have been released, 'Planes' in 2013 and 'Planes: Fire and Rescue' in 2014.
'Planes' film was co-written and executive produced by Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios' chief creative officer John Lasseter, who directed the 'Cars' films for Pixar.
The films star the voices of Dane Cook, Stacy Keach, Priyanka Chopra, Brad Garrett, Teri Hatcher, Danny Mann, Cedric the Entertainer, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Roger Craig Smith, John Cleese, Carlos Alazraqui, Val Kilmer, and Anthony Edwards.
Originally planned as a direct-to-video film (DisneyToon Studios specializes in those), but at virtually the last minute (in move studio time) Disney decided that the finished product was worthy of release to theaters. Disney premiered the film on August 2, 2013, aiming it straight at pilots.
"Planes" was first shown at a special screening at The Fly-In Theater at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, an annual gathering of aviation enthusiasts in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, then released wide a week later. For a film that originally was headed straight to the big box stores to sit on the shelf, 'Planes' did phenomenally well in theaters, grossing $219,788,712 worldwide and spawning the sequel, 'Planes: Fire and Rescue,' which also was theatrically and did well in theaters.
'Planes' and its sequel are light-hearted romps with a touch of romance that touch the hearts of theatergoers.
