SpongeBob SquarePants is one of the most beloved characters on television. SpongeBob is the star of an animated TV series created by marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg for Nickelodeon. The SpongeBob SquarePants television series began airing on Nickelodeon on 17 July 1999 after a one-off special on 1 May 1999. There have been two feature film versions of SpongeBob SquarePants, and so far there have been a dozen seasons with perhaps many more to come.

There are many characters in the SpongeBob SquarePants world. SpongeBob himself is a sea sponge who lives in a submerged pineapple with his friend Gary. Gary is a snail who works as a fry cook at the local fast food restaurant called the Krusty Krab.
SpongeBob SquarePants' best friend is Patrick Star, a starfish who lives under a rock. Squidward Tentacles is an unfriendly octopus who lives nearby and works as a cashier. Mr. Krabs, a red crab, runs the Krusty Krab restaurant. Mr. Krabs' daughter is Pearl, a sperm whale. Sandy Cheeks is a squirrel who lives underwater by wearing a diving suit.
The Krusty Krab is not the only restaurant in town. Across the street is the Chum Bucket restaurant which is run by Plankton and his friend Karen. While there is a fierce competition between the Krusty Krab and the Chum Bucket, Mr. Krabs has a secret recipe for Krabby Patty burgers which gives him a leg up. A continuing theme is Plankton and Karen's attempts to steal the recipe so that they can put Mr. Krabs out of business.
There are a lot of other characters in SpongeBob SquarePants. The show has become a bimonthly comic book series, "SpongeBob Comics."
There also are several albums of songs from the SpongeBob SquarePants show. These include SpongeBob SquarePants: Original Theme Highlights (2001), SpongeBob's Greatest Hits (2009), and The Yellow Album (2005).
There are SpongeBob SquarePants theme park rides at Six Flags Over Texas, Flamingo Land Resort, the Shedd Aquarium, the Mystic Aquarium, and elsewhere.
There also have been some SpongeBob SquarePants video games. These include Legend of the Lost Spatula (2001) and SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom (2003).
Naturally, there is a lot of SpongeBob SquarePants merchandise. This includes various tie-ins with fast food restaurants such as Burger King and big-box stores such as Target.
SpongeBob SquarePants is a global phenomenon. It has been viewed in 170 countries and broadcast in 24 languages.
There even is a SpongeBob SquarePants automobile. Toyota worked with Nickelodeon in 2014 to produce the Toyota Highlander in a SpongeBob SquarePants theme.
There's no question about it, if you have had small children over the past 20 years, nobody has to tell you about SpongeBob SquarePants. He is a marketing earthquake. Kids love him, and if parents want happy kids, parents love him, too.
The next SpongeBob SquarePants film currently is scheduled to be released on 17 July 2020. Paramount easily could change that release date. The tentative title is " It's a Wonderful Sponge." The SpongeBob SquarePants film is to be directed by Paul Tibbitt.
As of this writing in 2018, nine seasons of SpongeBob SquarePants have been released on DVD. The most recent season to be released, Season 9, was released on 10 October 2017. All but the most recently released season are available in Region 1, Region 2, and Region 4, with Season 9 only available in Season 1 as of this writing.
SpongeBob SquarePants is in the Madame Tussauds wax museum in New York City. That would make it a good destination to visit if you are traveling with small children who like SpongeBob SquarePants.
There are a lot of adults who like SpongeBob SquarePants. These include many politicians who may have ulterior motives for claiming that they are fans.
The actor who voices SpongeBob SquarePants is Tom Kenny. He created an annoying laugh to make the character distinct.
