Long Live Tweety Bird!

Tweety (Tweety Bird) is a yellow canary from the Warner Bros. Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series of animated cartoons. The name "Tweety" sounds like "sweetie" but also stands for the sound that birds make. He (or she) actually is based on old-time comic Red Skelton's famous "Mean Widdle Kid," though that has been long forgotten. Tweety was a huge star in animated shorts back in the day, showing up in no less than 47 cartoons in the golden age.


Bob Clampett was the animator who made Tweety into the bird that he (or she) is today. Clampett added two hungry cats named Babbit and Catstello, obviously based on Abbott and Costello, was voiced by the legendary voice guy Mel Blanc. Blanc actually had a huge hit single in the early 1950s with "I Tawt I Taw A Puddy Tat", Tweety's catchphrase.


Tweety still makes appearances, though often they are just walk-ons. However, Warner Brothers regained interest in the character, with plans to make a Tweety Bird short film. So, all of us huge Tweety Bird fans may be in for a lot more Tweety Bird appearances in the not-too-distant future.
